Why Guatemalan Jadeite?

Why Guatemalan Jadeite?

An Ancient Jade Tradition

Guatemalan jadeite has a history stretching back thousands of years. It was treasured by ancient Mesoamerican civilizations, including the Olmec and Maya, and was carved into ornaments, ceremonial objects and symbols of life, protection and status.

Its sources were lost for centuries following the Spanish conquest. Significant deposits were rediscovered in Guatemala during the twentieth century, bringing this ancient jadeite tradition back to the modern world.

Genuine Jadeite at a More Accessible Price

Myanmar and Guatemala are both important sources of jadeite jade. Myanmar jadeite has a longer-established international market and often carries a substantial origin premium. Fine Guatemalan jadeite can offer distinctive colors and natural beauty at a more accessible material cost.

This allows us to provide genuine, hand-carved jadeite jewelry at a fairer price. However, affordability does not replace quality: every stone is evaluated individually for its color, translucency, texture, craftsmanship and treatment status.

Jadeite, Not Nephrite

The word “jade” includes more than one gem material. Jadeite and nephrite are both traditionally recognized as jade, but they have different mineral compositions.

Guatemalan and Myanmar jade commonly sold as Fei Cui belongs to the jadeite-related category. Hetian jade, by comparison, is primarily nephrite and should not be described as Fei Cui. RUICY Jade specializes mainly in natural Guatemalan jadeite.

How We Source Our Jadeite

Most RUICY Jade pieces are created from newly sourced Guatemalan rough selected for our workshop. From time to time, we may also offer a limited number of privately sourced or old-stock jadeite pieces.

Every piece is selected and carved individually. The origin, material, treatment status and certificate information will be stated on its product page whenever applicable. Our photographs show the actual product, including its natural textures, color variations and inclusions.
